Day 7

There are people who study kissing.  The study of kissing is called philematology.  So, I consider this one big study in media-based anthropologic philematalogy.  We are analyzing the what makes the kisses good, as well as the romantic area surrounding them.

Day 7: Best Movie Kisses, North and South

When you first hear the title of this movie, you probably are thinking that it's a Civil War story.  It's actually referring to the North and South of England and how the North came to be Industrialize and the South was the "refined" area.  I love Elizabeth Gaskell, so love stories by Elizabeth Gaskell that have more to offer than just romance are choice.   Besides, Richard Armitage is such a beautiful specimen of masculinity.



Day 7: Best TV Kisses, The Middle

I know that a lot of people don't know The Middle.  It's a sitcom about an average, lower-middle class family in Indiana.  I find it to be the funniest show on all of television.  This kiss shows us that two people who have been married for nineteen years and have three kids can love each other as much as two young, just-in-love people can.  Also, in the actual show, the parents' date in the bowling alley is juxtaposed with the three kids driving all over town trying to find the awkward, fifteen-year-old daughter's coat so that their parents don't think they can't take care of themselves, while the seventeen-year-old jock son is supposed to be reading Of Mice and Men, which he hasn't started but needs to have finished by tomorrow, so the braniac ten-year-old is in the back reading and simultaneously summarizing Steinbeck in the back seat ("Oh, never mind, he just snapped its neck,"  "Wait, he snapped its neck,"  "What?!  He just snapped HER neck!")



 Day 7: Best Movie Kisses, Bambi

Okay, our second set of animal kissing.  But Bambi is twitterpated.  And let's face it, twitterpation is fun.

I put North and South in my Netflix queue last year after reading an earlier blog post of yours in which you included a clip. I loved it!

Hannah and I both love North and South. One of my all time favorite mini-series, and books by the way. Sometimes I just go to Youtube to watch this kiss. Elizabeth Gaskell has many other good books, too. Wives and Daughters is also a good mini-series, although Gaskell never actually finished the book. The book Mary Barton is good, too. And of course, Richard Armitage is swoon-worthy in almost all of his roles.

I have recently noticed a trend of just purely over-analyzing Disney movies.  In this category, I also include the fascination with photoshopping Disney characters to swap genders, races, or eras, as well as making princesses have "realistic" body shapes (which is something I could write a whole other post about, and it wouldn't be pretty.  Spoiler alert:  I find it to be one of the most unempowering trends of recent years).  However, I sometimes wonder at how much people are reading into Disney movies.  Today, I'm going to over-analyze their over-analysis. Derevaun Seraun! Derevaun Seraun!

James Joyce is my kind of guy. He made puzzles that I like to think are just for me. He was a great lover of languages, and he is sometimes called the father of a literary technique called polyglotism. This is when you insert other languages in there. Just 'cuz. So, in James Joyce's wonderful story, "Eveline" there is a phrase that nobody knows what it is. Even to this day. "Derevaun Seraun! Derevaun Seraun!" Many people believe it to be corrupted Irish Gaelic. Needing a break from homework, I have approached this by taking the words and then transliterating them into Irish Gaelic, trying to create Irish Gaelic that would be spoken by someone of this status in this time in Ireland. Nationalist, but not educated enough to actually understand all the ins and outs of the language. I came up with two possible phrases that I find very probable. What does it mean to be a Russell?

As many know, most European families (not all, but most) have a coat of arms, a crest, a motto, all that good stuff. So, I decided to look a bit into what being a Russell means. And maybe I'll do the same for Hatches, because I am a Hatch too. The last name Russell is Scottish and means "Red-headed" and derives from the Norman name of Roussel. The Russells are a well-respected Highland Scot clan, complete with Scottish crest and tartan: The motto on the crest "virtus sine macula" means "Virtue without blemish." As Scotland incorporated more and more into England, the Russells became nobility in that world as well, and were thus presented with a coat of arms: And yes, the motto written on that one is "che sara sara."
